Creative ELA Skills Game. Turn your classroom into a Valentine’s Day crime scene with this interactive ELA mystery that keeps students engaged while practicing essential language skills. In this Valentine’s Day activity, students become detectives racing against the clock to solve the mystery of Cupid’s disappearance in the town of Lovewell. Working in teams, they move around the room to uncover hidden clues by completing spelling, grammar, punctuation, and figurative language challenges. As students eliminate suspects, locations, and methods, they piece together who kidnapped Cupid, where it happened, and how it was done—just in time to save Valentine’s Day.

How Does the Valentine’s Mystery Activity Work?:

  • Students are introduced to a story-based mystery set on the eve of Valentine’s Day, when Cupid suddenly vanishes and panic spreads across Lovewell. They learn about a cast of suspects with clear motives, a set of possible locations, and several suspicious methods that could explain Cupid’s disappearance.
  • Working in small groups, students circulate the room to find clue cards hidden at stations. Each card requires students to apply ELA skills—such as correcting spelling and homophones, identifying figurative language, fixing punctuation, and analyzing capitalization—to reveal a clue.
  • These clues allow students to eliminate suspects, locations, or methods in their detective booklet. Once groups believe they have solved the case, they call out, “We solved the mystery!” and check their solution. The class can then review each clue together and reveal the final culprit using the answer slides.

What’s Included in the Valentine’s Mystery Activity?:

➡️ Teacher Instructions: Clear, step-by-step directions walk you through everything from prep to wrap-up, including how to set up stations, group students, manage timing, and facilitate the mystery reveal. These instructions make it easy to run the Valentine’s Day activity smoothly.

➡️ Introductory Slideshow: A ready-to-use slideshow introduces the backstory, explains the mystery setup, and models how students should use clues to eliminate suspects, locations, and methods.

➡️ Cupid Is Missing Classroom Poster: Instantly hook students by displaying this eye-catching missing poster on your classroom door or board before class begins. It sets the tone, sparks curiosity, and pulls students into the story as soon as they enter the room.

➡️ Valentine’s Day Clue Cards: Students rotate through ten mystery stations hidden around the classroom. Each station contains a clue card that requires students to apply an ELA skill in order to unlock a piece of information. Every completed task allows groups to eliminate a suspect, location, or method in their detective booklet. Skills practiced include:

  • Spelling
  • Homophones
  • Commas
  • Capitalization
  • Apostrophes
  • Metaphors
  • Similes
  • Hyperbole
  • Personification
  • Adjectives

➡️ Student Detective Response Booklet: Students record clues, eliminate possibilities, and track their reasoning in a structured detective booklet. This keeps groups organized and ensures students are justifying their decisions based on evidence.

➡️ Answer Key & Solution Slides: A complete answer key is included for every station, along with slides that clearly explain how each clue points to the correct elimination. This makes it easy to review the mystery afterward, reinforce the ELA skills practiced, and show students how the evidence leads to the final answer.

This Valentine’s Day mystery activity blends movement, collaboration, problem-solving, and targeted ELA skill practice into one high-engagement experience. Students stay focused, motivated, and invested as they work together to crack the case, making it a perfect, classroom-tested activity for the days leading up to Valentine’s Day.
