Pre-Reading Activity:
➡️ First Lines Pre-Reading Activity: Start your A Wrinkle in Time novel study by examining the first lines of famous novels and exploring how authors hook readers from the very beginning. A Wrinkle in Time opens with the iconic line, “It was a dark and stormy night.” Students will analyze well-known opening lines from a variety of texts and discuss how a novel’s first sentence can hint at tone, genre, and theme.
Chapters 1-2:
➡️ A Wrinkle in Time Mind Reader Activity: In this highly engaging A Wrinkle in Time activity, students empathize with Meg as she struggles to understand Charles Wallace’s unusual abilities. With the help of a pre-arranged classroom trick, students are convinced that one of their classmates is a “mind reader,” creating a fun and memorable experience that mirrors Meg’s confusion and curiosity.
Chapters 3-4:
➡️ Changing Education Paradigms Activity: In Chapter 3, Meg helps Calvin with his homework and shares her frustrations with the education system. Students will reflect on their own school experiences by watching a short video, responding to thought-provoking quotes, and discussing possible changes to modern education. Chapters 5-6:
➡️ A Wrinkle in Time Social Media Allusions: Students explore the allusions to famous historical figures mentioned in Chapter 5 by creating a social media profile for one of them. They will also research a modern change-maker of their choice and design a profile highlighting that person’s impact, helping students better understand how L’Engle connects real-world influences to the novel.
➡️ Building a Paper or Pipe Cleaner Tesseract: Make your A Wrinkle in Time novel study hands-on by having students build a tesseract, the four-dimensional shape used for “tessering” through space and time. Two building options are provided, allowing students to visually and physically explore this important scientific concept from the story.
➡️ Greetings from Camazotz Manual & Postcard: Inspired by the manual Charles quotes in Chapter 6, students create their own page from the Camazotz manual and design a postcard sent home from the planet. This creative assignment helps students think critically about the strict, controlled society on Camazotz during your A Wrinkle in Time novel study.
➡️ The Happy Medium Crystal Ball Assignment: Students imagine that the Happy Medium can see their future in her crystal ball. They will draw and write about what she might reveal, blending creativity with reflection as they connect the novel’s themes to their own lives.
➡️ A Wrinkle in Time Awareness Campaign: After discussing Mrs. Which’s quote about responsibility and change, students design an awareness campaign focused on an issue they care about. This activity encourages students to take action, just as the characters do, and connects the novel’s message to real-world problem-solving.
Chapters 7-8:
➡️ Wrinkled Writing: In Chapter 7, the children enjoy a beautiful turkey dinner, and L’Engle uses descriptive language and imagery to describe some of the food. Students will do the same using the “wrinkled writing” method. One student starts the writing by focusing on one sense. Then, they crumple the paper into a ball (wrinkling it) and tesser it to the front of the room. Another student picks it up and continues with the next sense. Detailed instructions are provided for this A Wrinkle in Time activity.
Chapters 9-10:
➡️ Individuality Quilt: In Chapter 9, Charles explains that there is equality on Camazotz because everybody is exactly alike. Meg realizes that “like” and “equal” are not the same thing. She understands that differences are important and that equality means celebrating those differences. Students will celebrate their own individuality by creating an image and written square to contribute to a classroom paper quilt.
Chapters 11-12:
➡️ Describing Color Activity: In Chapter 11, Meg attempts to describe light to Aunt Beast, but she finds it challenging because sight does not exist on this planet. Students will imagine that they live in a black-and-white world and are the ONLY person who can see color. They will try to describe the primary colors so their fellow citizens can understand.
➡️ Writing a Sonnet: In Chapter 12, Mrs. Whatsit explains the importance of individual freedom by saying that life is like a sonnet. Students will have a chance to write their own sonnet in this fun writing activity.
Post-Reading:
➡️ Creating a New Planet Project: Students will imagine that instead of going immediately back to Earth, the characters accidentally tesser to one more planet. They will be responsible for designing and creating this planet from scratch.
➡️ Movie Novel Comparison: Students will watch the film version of the novel and identify differences between the movie and the written text.
➡️ Essay Topics & Graphic Organizers: Students will write a formal essay at the end of the A Wrinkle in Time Unit using the provided topics and organizers.
