A Wrinkle in Time Activity - Build A Tesseract Novel Craft Creative Assignment
A Wrinkle in Time Activity - Build A Tesseract Novel Craft Creative Assignment: Give your students a hands-on way to explore the concept of tessering from the novel with this creative activity inspired by A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. After learning how the characters travel through dimensions using a tesseract—a four-dimensional cube—students will build their own tesseract model to visualize this complex idea. They’ll engage with the text in a tangible way by following step-by-step instructions to construct either a paper-based or pipe cleaner version of a tesseract.
This is included in our novel unit plan:

Included in the A Wrinkle in Time Build a Tesseract Creative Activity:
➡️ Student Instructions and Tesseract Overview: Introduce the idea of tessering and guide students through the process of building their own model with this step-by-step guide. Two versions are included based on if you want to use paper or pipe cleaners.
➡️ Printable Paper Tesseract Template: Provide students with a cut-and-fold paper option to create a 3D tesseract model. Simply print the templates, and students cut along the lines of each of the sections and use the teacher instructions to construct their own personal tesseract.
➡️ Paper and Pipe Cleaner Model Options: If you want to skip the printing and cutting, an alternative construction method is provided where students can use instructions for how to construct their own pipe cleaner tesseract.
How the A Wrinkle in Time Build a Tesseract Creative Activity works:
- Students begin by reviewing the concept of a tesseract and how it functions in the novel as a shortcut through time and space.
- Then, they choose between two creative options: crafting a paper model using the printable template or building a flexible version with pipe cleaners.
- Have students complete their models to help them better understand this key scientific idea from the novel in a visual, hands-on way. These look great on display in the classroom!
