This Maze Runner project challenges students to become experienced Gladers responsible for preparing new Greenies for survival in the Glade. Using important details from the novel, students create a detailed Maze and Glade Survival Guide that explains the rules, roles, dangers, and survival strategies needed to navigate life inside the Maze. As they write, students practice organizing information, developing clear explanations, and creating step-by-step instructions. This creative Maze Runner project encourages students to think critically about how the Gladers survive and work together to survive. To complete the assignment, students also create a Greenie Advice video where they share survival tips, warnings, and guidance as if they were real Gladers helping new arrivals survive what lies ahead.

Included in The Maze Runner Project - Maze and Glade Survival Guide and Video:

➡️ Maze Survival Guide & Greenie Advice Video Assignment Handout: This detailed assignment handout introduces students to the project. It shares information about their role as experienced Gladers responsible for preparing new Greenies for survival. It explains the purpose of the project, outlines each required section of the survival guide, and provides instructions for creating the accompanying “Greenie Advice” video where students share survival tips and warnings using details from the novel.

➡️ The Maze Survival Guide Graphic Organizers: Students use planning pages to organize information for each section of their survival guide, including the Maze environment, rules of the Glade, jobs and roles, dangers, and essential survival strategies. These organizers help students gather accurate details from the novel and present them in a clear, organized way to complete their final guide and video.

➡️ The Maze Survival Guide and Video Assessment Rubric: A clear and detailed rubric is included to evaluate student work. It outlines expectations for content, organization, writing conventions, and communication.

How The Maze Runner Project - Maze and Glade Survival Guide and Video Works:

  1. Review the assignment expectations with students, including what must be included in the survival manual and how their work will be assessed using the rubric.
  2. Students use the included template to organize their ideas and gather details from the novel. As they work through each section, they focus on writing clear, step-by-step explanations that would help a new Greenie understand how to survive in the Glade and the Maze.
  3. Once their manual is complete, students use their work to create a short “Greenie Advice” video. They present their most important survival tips in a clear and engaging way, using their guide as the foundation for what they share.

This activity is ideally used after reading Chapters 28, when students have a strong understanding of the Glade and the Maze, but it can also work well as a culminating activity at the end of the novel.
