September 11 Assignment - Interview Activity for 9/11 Patriot Day: The terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten. This slideshow, assignment, and reflection allows your students to learn about the 9/11 tragedy from a trusted person in their life. Students will interview a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, family friend, or anyone else who was an adult at the time of the attacks. They will ask them questions about what they remember about September 11, and record their answers in as much detail as possible. A slideshow is included to introduce the assignment and a post-interview assignment is included for students to reflect on the experience.

Included in the September 11 Assignment:
➡️ 9/11 Interview Assignment: Share this two-page assignment with students with five ready-made interview questions they can ask a trusted adult about their experience on September 11. The questions were designed to elicit detailed answers and will have the interviewee about what they remember about 9/11, their feelings at that time, their opinions on how the US and world responded to the attacks, how the event changed the country, and more.
➡️ Presentation to Introduce the 9/11 Interview Assignment: Use this 11-slide PowerPoint presentation to introduce this assignment to students. The slideshow includes some background historical information on the September 11 attack on the US, an introduction to the assignment, tips for conducting the interview, and more.
➡️ September 11 Interview Assignment Reflection: After students have completed the interview, have them complete this half-page reflection where they consider what they learned and the difference between hearing someone's experience vs. reading about 9/11.
After students have completed the activity, have each person share their interview findings with the class. This will provide students with a more personalized understanding of the September 11 attacks on the US as it will not be a nonfiction text but the experiences of those who were adults at the time of 9/11. This makes an excellent assignment to use around Patriot Day.
