Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief Activity - The Underworld Simile Game is an engaging classroom activity that encourages students to think creatively while practicing similes. Inspired by Percy’s eerie journey through the Underworld in Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, this game gives students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of figurative language in a fun, collaborative group setting. The game fosters language skills and creative thinking, all while reinforcing key imagery from the novel.

How The Lightning Thief The Underworld Simile Game works:

  1. After students have read about Percy’s trip to the Underworld, introduce the game by reviewing similes as a literary device. Focus on how they add depth to writing by comparing two unlike things using “like” or “as.”
  2. In small groups, students take turns being the judge. The judge flips over a “Simile Starter” card, reading the prompt aloud to the group.
  3. The other players then write down their best simile ending using their “Fill in the Blank” cards or their own ideas. The goal is to craft a creative and descriptive simile that fits the starter.
  4. Once all players have written their similes, the judge picks the one they find most fitting or entertaining. The player whose simile is selected keeps the “Simile Starter” card. The first player to collect three cards wins!

This activity is best used after students have completed Chapter 18 of the novel, once they are familiar with the Underworld setting and can draw from the novel’s eerie imagery for inspiration.
