Holes Writing Prompts Video Clips is a ready-to-use resource that will help your students make connections to their reading of Holes by Louis Sachar. Students will watch a short video clip on YouTube that relates to a topic, theme, or idea presented in the novel. A related journal prompt is included and students share their thoughts and ideas in writing. The videos are not specific to the novel, but they relate in a way that allows students to make a text-to-self or text-to-world connection.

Included in The Holes Writing Prompts Video Resource:

➡️ Video Journal Slideshow: The presentation includes links to nine videos that connect with topics, themes, or ideas presented in Holes by Louis Sachar. The video clips are broken down by chapter set and include a link to the video and a related prompt. The chapter sets are as follows:

  • Chapters 1-5
  • Chapters 6-8
  • Chapters 9-13
  • Chapters 14-20
  • Chapters 21-27
  • Chapters 28-32
  • Chapters 33-39
  • Chapters 40-45
  • Chapters 46-50

➡️ Student Response Page: Provide this response page for students to write their response to the video journal prompt.

➡️ Rubric: Want to grade the video journals? No problem! We have included a quick-check rubric which will make assessing these a breeze.

The videos are short (mostly under five minutes long). They are not about the novel specifically, but they connect to something that happens in the chapters in either content or theme. This allows students to make text connections between what happens in the novel and their own life or the world around them.

How to Use The Holes Writing Prompts Video Resource:

  1. After students have read the appropriate chapter set, play the video clip in class and share the related prompt.
  2. Give the students 5-10 minutes to respond to the prompt in writing.
  3. Split the students into groups and have them share their writing and discuss the prompt, or discuss it as a whole class.
