IN CLASS ACTIVITIES & ASSIGNMENTS:

CHAPTERS 1 - 5: PALINDROMES

→ The main character of Louis Sachar's novel, Holes, has a very interesting name: Stanley Yelnats! This is an interesting name because it is a palindrome. A palindrome is a word that is read the same way forward as it is backward!

Show your students other palindromes with this fun, ready-to-use digital activity! Students will get clues to help them try to guess words that are palindromes. For example, their clue might be "You might see a checkered flag wave when this vehicle crosses the finish line." The answer? RACECAR!

CHAPTERS 6 - 8: PLOT DIAGRAM

→ Use this paperless assignment as a way for students to review the Elya and Madame Zeroni plot line of Holes. Included is a blank student version of the plot diagram for them to type directly into, as well as a detailed teacher answer key.

CHAPTER 9 - 13: PIG LATIN

→ In chapter 11 of Louis Sachar's novel, Holes, the reader learns that X-Rays nickname is Pig Latin for his real name, Rex! Teach your students how to speak, read, and understand the Pig Latin language in minutes with this fun activity! Not only does this resource engage your students, but it is also great for practicing problem solving and decoding skills.

CHAPTERS 14 - 20: CAMP GREEN LAKE DIGITAL BROCHURE

→ Use this creative assignment as a way for your students to examine this setting (and some of the characters) in detail! Students will create a promotional brochure for Camp Green Lake!

CHAPTERS 21 - 27: RACISM HISTORICAL CONTEXT

→ In the novel, Holes, Sam and Kate are subjected to cruel racism as a result of their love for each other. When Sam and Kate kiss, the town turns against them. Sam would have been hanged for this action, but instead Trout Walker kills him.

Help your students understand the historical context of this event in the novel by showing them an animated clip that describes the Civil Rights Movement and the life of Martin Luther King (YouTube is required). The assignment has students fill in information they have learned about particular topics described in the video. An answer key is also provided for you to review with your students.

CHAPTERS 28 – 32: WANTED POSTER FOR KISSIN’ KATE BARLOW:

→ In the novel, Holes, the reader learns a great deal about Kate Barlow. Kate loses her beloved, Sam, to cruel violence driven by racism. This act turns her into the infamous outlaw, Kissin' Kate Barlow. Have your students demonstrate their understanding of character by creating a digital WANTED poster for Kissin' Kate Barlow. Included is a detailed pre-writing graphic organizer and a digital poster template.

CHAPTERS 33-39: LIZARD RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT:

→ In Holes, the most feared creature is the deadly yellow-spotted lizard that lurks inside the holes the boys are digging.

While this type of lizard doesn't really exist, there are lots of other interesting lizards that your students can research! This one-slide, ready-to-use assignment has students do online research about a type of lizard of their choice. A useful website and suggestions for lizards are also chosen if students need help finding information. After students are done, have them share the information with the rest of the class!

CHAPTERS 40 – 45: STANLEY & ZERO COMPARISON:

→ Stanley and Zero seem like complete opposites at the beginning of the novel. As the plot develops, the reader realizes that they have more in common than it first appears! After students have finished reading until chapter 45, have them complete this digital Venn Diagram comparing the two characters. Included in your purchase is a ready-to-print Venn Diagram specifically created for the novel and an answer key for easy class review or marking.

POST-READING ASSIGNMENTS & PROJECT:

FAMILY TREE ASSIGNMENT:

→ Stanley reveals a great deal about his family ancestry. Have your students make a personal connection with the novel by learning about their own family history! This assignment has students "dig" into their family, by asking their relatives to tell them stories about themselves, their parents, or their parents' parents! Have students write facts or short stories about family members on this tree, then have them share with the rest of the class.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE WORKSHEETS:
