Help your students learn and show their understanding of idioms with this highly-engaging interactive escape room / break out activity! Students should have an understanding of the meaning of idiom, and would also benefit from some pre-teaching with idiom examples.

HOW IT WORKS

Students work in small groups and move about the classroom to five different stations to complete puzzles and activities related to idioms.

In the first station, students match up idioms in quotes by famous people to their meaning. They insert the name of the person who said the quote into the proper place in their answer booklet to reveal a mystery code word.

In the second station, students answer multiple-choice questions to correctly define idioms. The answers will reveal a hidden mystery code word.

In the third station, students read a passage and attempt to locate the idioms used.

Based on where the idioms are located, they then use a key along the side to input words into the answer booklet to reveal a code word.

In the fourth station, students assemble puzzle pieces that match up idioms in sentence examples to their correct definitions. When students put the puzzle pieces in order, a mystery code word is revealed.

The final station has students decode an encryption based on hidden symbols they have to find throughout the game to reveal a quote!
