This St. Patrick’s Day writing activity gives your students a fun and collaborative way to practice narrative writing with a creative pot of gold-themed twist. The pot of gold method brings collaboration, movement, and creativity together as students build a narrative inspired by visual prompts as a team. Students will begin a story, crumple their paper into a “piece of gold,” and toss it to the front of the room, aiming for the treasure box at the end of the rainbow, where it will be retrieved and continued by the next writer! The interactive pot of gold format keeps the energy high and encourages students to focus on setting, character development, plot, and conflict as they work together. With clear teacher instructions and 30 ready-to-use worksheets, you’ll have everything you need to facilitate a creative St. Patrick’s Day writing activity with a fun, festive twist. It’s always a memorable favorite that students ask to do again!

How This Pot of Gold St. Patrick’s Day Writing Activity Works:

  • Distribute 30 pre-made worksheets, each featuring a different St. Patrick’s Day-inspired visual story starter, to students. Instruct them to begin writing their own narratives based on these prompts.
  • After a predetermined amount of time, instruct the first writer to crumple their story sheet into a “piece of gold” and toss it to the front of the room toward the rainbow on the screen.
  • Encourage students to gather at the front and select one of the crumpled “gold” stories to continue writing from where the previous writer left off.
  • Repeat the crumpling and tossing process twice more, introducing further creative twists to the narratives.
  • Once all three stages are complete, return the stories to their original authors. Instruct students to revise, edit, and create a final polished copy of their narratives.

Students always have so much fun with this activity, and they usually can’t believe you’re letting them crumple their stories! For an extra thematic touch, try printing the assignment on yellow paper so the crumpled pages resemble “pieces of gold.”
