Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief Activity - Capture the Flag Camp Game
Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief Activity - Capture the Flag Camp Game: Bring the thrill of Camp Half-Blood into your classroom with this high-energy activity based on Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. In this interactive lesson, students will first analyze how the iconic game of Capture the Flag is played in the novel. Then, they’ll work in teams to design flags that reflect their group’s values and strategy. Finally, students will take their plans into action by playing the game in a gym or outdoor space—mirroring one of the most exciting scenes from the novel. This activity blends comprehension, creativity, and collaboration in a way that students won’t forget.

How The Percy Jackson Capture the Flag Camp Game works:
- Students will begin by reading Chapter 8 of The Lightning Thief and gathering text evidence that explains how Capture the Flag is played at Camp Half-Blood. Using this information, they will complete a game rules assignment to outline strategies, rules, and team alliances.
- Next, divide students into four teams. Each group will collaborate to create a team name, motto, and flag design that represents their identity and approach to the game.
- Finally, take the activity beyond the page as students head to a large open space to play Capture the Flag. Use the interactive instruction slideshow to explain the rules and guide students through the game setup and play.
This activity is best used after students have completed Chapter 8 of the novel, once they are familiar with the rules of Capture the Flag, the camp dynamics at Camp Half-Blood, and the alliances formed between the cabins.
