Have your students develop their writing and inference skills with this creative assignment for Number The Stars by Lois Lowry where they will become journalists for the illegal Resistance newspaper, De Frie Danske (The Free Danes).

In Lois Lowry's Number The Stars, Peter brings the Johansens an illegal newspaper about the Resistance movement against the Nazis in Denmark. The reader doesn't know what exactly is in the newspaper, but after reading the novel, they can infer what might be included based on the events that happen at Uncle Henrik's house. For example, they could write about the movement of Jews by boat to Sweden, the chemical used to trick the dogs, the cruelties of the Nazis against members of the Resistance etc.

This assignment requires higher-order thinking and challenges your students to infer information or read between the lines. Included in your purchase are two templates of the newspaper for students to include images and articles (one with De Frie Danske and one with The Free Danes). Also included is a poster to put up to display the students' work underneath!
