The Outsiders Activity - Analyzing the Theme of Stereotyping in the Novel is a fun and creative activity that will help your students make connections and analyze theme. After reading chapters 3-4 of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, students will participate in an interactive activity that will help them examine their own stereotypes and stereotypes made in the novel. This activity for The Outsiders is designed to help students empathize with the characters in the novel and examine the complexities of the theme of stereotyping in the novel.

➡️ 5 Stereotyping Images: 5 Images that will be placed around your classroom with prompting questions that will ask students to make first impressions (which sometimes can lead to stereotyping).
➡️ Student Assignment Page: An assignment sheet for students to record their answers to the prompting questions on each of the images as they do a gallery walk.
➡️ The Outsiders Activity Task Card: A task card where students will apply what they learned to the novel. They will examine Ponyboy's changing perspective on the Socs, considering the initial stereotypes he may have made. A detailed teacher answer key for The Outsiders activity task card is provided for class review or grading.
How to use The Outsiders Activity Examining Stereotyping Theme resource:
- Students will do a classroom gallery walk to examine a variety of images around the classroom.
- While they circulate, they will complete independent prompting questions that may elicit stereotypical responses.
- With their group, they will discuss their responses and examine their answers and consider if they made any stereotypes. This process is usually an eye-opening experience for students, and it helps them empathize with the characters in The Outsiders.
- Finally, students will complete The Outsiders task card, which allows them to explore Ponyboy's changing perspective on the Socs in chapter 3.
