Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief Activity - Percy’s Wanted Poster Project invites students to explore character analysis through a creative and critical lens. In this activity for Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, students will imagine how the mortal world might perceive Percy’s actions as suspicious or criminal, without knowledge of the magical world. By designing a wanted poster that highlights Percy’s so-called crimes and notable traits, students will practice analyzing point of view and supporting their ideas with text evidence, all while engaging in a fun, real-world project. This activity is ideal for deepening understanding of point of view and character development, making it a great addition to any Percy Jackson unit.

This is included in our unit plan for the novel:

Included in The Lightning Thief Percy's Wanted Poster Activity:

➡️ Wanted Poster Planning Page: Encourage students to think critically about Percy’s character by filling out sections for his physical description, crimes, personality traits, and more—while supporting their ideas with text evidence.

➡️ Wanted Poster Template: Provide students with a creative space to design a final wanted poster, complete with space for an image of Percy, a description of his crimes, and a bounty offer.

How The Lightning Thief Percy's Wanted Poster Activity works:

  1. After reading the scenes where Percy’s actions might appear suspicious to outsiders, introduce the assignment by reviewing how point of view influences the way characters and events are interpreted.
  2. Students begin by filling out the Wanted Poster Planning Page, using prompting questions and text evidence to brainstorm details such as Percy’s physical appearance, the “crimes” he’s accused of, and his defining traits.
  3. Based on their planning, students then complete a polished Wanted Poster Template, including a sketch or image of Percy, a list of places he frequents, and a fictional reward for his capture.

This activity is best used after students have read Chapter 13, once they’ve seen several of Percy’s chaotic encounters with the mortal world and can consider how these events might appear through a non-magical perspective.
