NUMBER THE STARS ASSIGNMENT: POST CARD IN CODE CREATIVE WRITING
Have your students demonstrate their understanding of the plot of Lois Lowry's best-selling novel, Number The Stars with this fun and creative assignment of writing a postcard in code.
Students take on the perspective of Mrs. Johansen and write a post-card to Mr. Johansen back in Copenhagen. The twist is that Mrs. Johansen must be very careful as the Nazis closely monitor the mail, so she must write the post card using a code (as Mr. Johansen does with Henrik earlier in the novel). Students develop their own code, and write a letter to Mr. Johansen to covertly tell him what has happened while she and the children have been visiting Henrik.
This assignment requires higher-order thinking and challenges your students to be creative. To help your struggling students, also included is a differentiated version of the assignment where students simply write a straight-forward postcard to Mr. Johansen.
