The videos are not specific to the play but are intentionally chosen to support deeper understanding. YouTube access is required, and teachers should always preview videos for appropriateness.

This Romeo and Juliet Unit Plan also includes creative assignments and activities for each act. You can learn more about what's included below:
Introducing the Family Feuds: Montagues vs. Capulets
➡️ Family Feuds Resources: Using the long-standing conflict between the Montagues and Capulet families as inspiration, you will divide your class into two houses during your Romeo and Juliet unit plan: the Montagues and the Capulets. After each act, the “families” participate in activities where they have the opportunity to earn points for their house in competition for a prize of the teacher’s choosing. If you choose to use this optional framework for the unit, an included slideshow introduces the Family Feuds. There are also slides with poems and instructions that can be used before each act to hook students into the challenges. A tally sheet is included to track points after each activity, along with a family crest–making activity students can complete to build team and family pride. This framework is optional.
Pre-Reading / Prologue
➡️ The Perfect Partner: In this assignment, students are prompted to think about their ideal life partner and contrast it with the hypothetical partner their parents might choose for them. This thought-provoking activity is designed to spark interest in Shakespeare’s tragic tale while setting the stage for discussion of the play’s themes and characters.
➡️ Prologue Paraphrase: Students will take a step back in time and reimagine the iconic prologue of the play in modern English using a ready-to-use graphic organizer that includes the original text and space to write a modern translation.
Act 1
➡️ Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare Insult Battle: Students dive into Act 1 to decode and modernize Shakespeare’s insults, gaining insight into how Shakespeare crafted his cutting words. The highlight of the activity is a spirited classroom duel between Montagues and Capulets, where students showcase their wit in a friendly war of words. This activity engages even reluctant learners while building familiarity with Shakespeare’s language.
Act 2
➡️ Star-Crossed Texting: Students reimagine the famous balcony scene exchange between Romeo and Juliet using the format of text messages. Using text evidence from the play, they create a modern dialogue between the star-crossed lovers.
➡️ Romeo and Juliet Classroom Wedding: In the play, the young lovers’ wedding is secret and private. In this ready-to-use activity, students imagine a version of Verona where the wedding is a public celebration attended by various characters. After reviewing the structure of wedding speeches, students write and present speeches from the perspective of different characters during an immersive classroom wedding.
Act 3
➡️ Romeo and Juliet Sonnet Slam: Engage your students in a poetry slam during your Romeo and Juliet unit by teaching them Shakespearean sonnet writing and applying it directly to the play with the included assignments, handouts, and graphic organizers. With clear instruction on iambic pentameter, rhyme scheme, and what to include in each of the quatrains and the final couplet, students will be fully prepared and confident as they begin writing their own poems about Romeo and Juliet.
Act 4
➡️ Juliet Soliloquy Mystery Word: Students will analyze Juliet’s soliloquy in Act 4, Scene 3, just before she drinks the fateful potion. They then respond to a series of multiple-choice analysis questions that assess comprehension and critical thinking. Once all answers are correct, students decipher the letters associated with each answer to reveal a mystery word connected to the scene.
➡️ Romeo and Juliet Social Media Page: This assignment is ready to use. Students create a “Fakebook” social media page based on Romeo or Juliet from Shakespeare’s play. Students enjoy considering the character’s physical appearance, thoughts, personality, and relationships with other characters. The finished pages also look great displayed in the classroom or hallway.
Act 5
➡️ Romeo’s Red Flags Character Assignment: A red flag is a warning sign of concerning behavior or traits that may indicate potential issues in a relationship. Although Romeo is often portrayed as a romantic figure, this resource encourages students to explore a different side of his character. Students analyze the red flags that appear throughout the play and decide whether they would recommend Romeo as a potential partner for someone they know.
➡️ Romeo and Juliet Symbolism Assignment: Students return to the play to draw conclusions about what recurring symbols such as roses, stars, masks, fire, and more represent in the text. They support their interpretations with text evidence in the form of direct quotes. This assignment also includes a detailed answer key for easy review or grading.
➡️ Friar Lawrence Mock Trial: This ready-to-use activity engages students in a classroom mock trial to determine whether Friar Lawrence should be held responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. After learning background information about courtroom trials, students defend or prosecute Friar Lawrence. This resource includes everything you need to facilitate the mock trial and ensure all students are actively engaged.
Post-Reading
➡️ Romeo and Juliet Plot Calendar Activity: What is especially remarkable about this play is that, despite its many events, the entire story unfolds within just five days. Students move small paper strips featuring key plot moments into their correct positions on a calendar. Once the events are accurately sequenced, a mystery phrase from the play is revealed. This engaging alternative to a traditional plot diagram helps students clearly understand the sequence of events.
➡️ Romeo and Juliet Newspaper Final Project: Students will be given the opportunity to create a newspaper called “The Verona Times” at the end of the Romeo and Juliet unit, in which they act as journalists living in the world of Romeo and Juliet. This project serves as an excellent final assessment for the play, with the added bonus of exposing students to basic journalism skills and terminology.
