A Long Walk to Water Vocabulary Booklet, Presentation, and Answer Key
This vocabulary resource helps students master new words from A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park through the use of context clues. Rather than memorizing definitions, students encounter challenging words through quotes from the novel, infer their meanings using context, and later confirm their understanding through class discussion and the provided presentation. This method not only builds vocabulary but also strengthens overall reading comprehension and textual analysis skills.

Included in the A Long Walk to Water Vocabulary Resource:
➡️ A Long Walk to Water Context Clues Slides: Use these instructional slides to introduce students to context clue strategies, such as identifying synonyms, antonyms, examples, and definitions, to help them decode unfamiliar words effectively.
➡️ A Long Walk to Water Vocabulary Booklet: Each of the four booklet pages includes carefully selected quotes from the novel with bolded vocabulary terms. Students use context clues to predict the meaning of each word, then record or revise their definitions after reviewing them.
➡️ A Long Walk to Water Vocabulary Definitions Presentation: After students complete their booklet activities, use this presentation to review and discuss the correct definitions. Each slide reinforces understanding by pairing the original quote with a student-friendly definition.
How to Use the A Long Walk to Water Vocabulary Resource:
Begin by teaching students how to use context clues to figure out unknown vocabulary. Vocabulary activities are organized by the following chapter sections:
- Section 1: Chapters 1–5
- Section 2: Chapters 6–10
- Section 3: Chapters 11–14
- Section 4: Chapters 15–18
After completing each section of the novel, have students tackle the corresponding vocabulary task. They’ll analyze the quote, make an educated guess about the word’s meaning, and then confirm or revise that guess with a dictionary or through class discussion using the provided slides.
